Ways to Create a Workspace Anywhere
Not every small business owner has the luxury of having a room they can dedicate to their business. And if you work from home full-time, this can be a challenge.
I am lucky enough to have a nice separate office, but I still find myself setting up and working from other areas of the house all the time. In fact, very often I am stationed at the kitchen island with my laptop. And keeping the family "stuff" separate from my work "stuff" can be very frustrating.
When I am working in a family space, there are a few things I do:
Keep the Area Clean
I don't allow any food or food preparation where my computer is. I also try to prevent my area from being the drop-spot for mail and reminders, and I regularly straighten and reorganize during the day.
Stick with Simplicity
I try to bring out the bare minimum of what I need for my work. I don't need a lot of things that are not on my computer to do my job, so this one is easy for me. Usually, I can get by with my laptop, BlackBerry and a notepad and pen.
Create an Off-Limits Area
As a kid, did you ever create invisible walls around yourself in the
car that your sibling was not allowed to touch? That's exactly what I try to do to protect my work from curious little hands. But having young children makes this a tough one for me. Generally, my kids know they are not to touch my computer, but they do need some reminders from time to time. One way to let them be involved without sacrificing your equipment is giving them a "work" area right next to yours. My daughter is frequently working along with me on her own computer and BlackBerry.
What are some ways you create a workspace in an area not dedicated solely to your business?
