Fears of Entrepreneurship: Work/Life Balance
It’s common to worry about how you will manage work and your home life if you start a business. And this is a well-founded fear because it’s hard. Achieving the ever-elusive balance is something most business owners struggle with, especially when your business becomes a significant part of your life.
I have not found a solution to this struggle, nor have I achieved a perfect work/life balance. But that’s OK. In fact, this is one fear that I think we should embrace and not attempt to conquer. In my experience, it’s the fear of not being able to juggle business ownership and a personal life that can make us more well-rounded – and happier – business owners.
Think about it. If you’re regularly worried about having enough time to tend to each aspect of your life, then you’re regularly shifting and modifying your behaviors to accommodate your needs and the needs of those around you. THAT can create a balance, at least a temporary one, because it’s the constant readjusting that makes a wobbly seesaw level.
The trick is to remain flexible and resilient in the face of changing demands because that’s what life – and business – requires. It seems like common sense, but this can be a tough lesson to learn for those of us who thrive on having control of our environments (yep, me). Once you understand and accept it (and let go of some of your desire for perfection), you can achieve a level of compromise, of give and take, that can help you excel in both areas of your life.
What has your experience been with work/life balance? Do you think it’s achievable?
