BigHugeThesaurus Cool Tool: Big Huge ThesaurusWhether you’re a writer by trade, for fun, or even if you stay as far away from writing as humanly possible, this is tool you can use.

Big Huge Thesaurus is a search engine for word-based inspiration. Here is how you can use the site:

  • As a traditional thesaurus + more. Go to http://words.bighugelabs.com, enter in your word and you’ll be presented with a list of synonyms, antonyms, words it sounds like and words it rhymes with (all linked to their own thesaurus pages).
  • As a blog post idea generator. Go to http://words.bighugelabs.com/blog.php and scroll through hundreds of blog post ideas to get some of your own. You can also submit your own ideas to be included on the list.
  • As a story plot generator. Similar to the blog post idea tool, go to http://words.bighugelabs.com/plot.php for a long list of story plot ideas.

The site is based on source data from the Princeton University WordNet database, the Carnegie Mellon Pronouncing Dictionary, and suggestions from thousands of people who use the service. And it has the power to nip writer’s block in the bud.

Thanks for this link! I so often use the thesaurus for writing prompts because I’m usually learning something new in the process! Have you ever seen or heard of “The Thinker’s Thesaurus” by Peter E. Meltzer? It is beyond wonderful for inspiring writing and expanding one’s vocabulary because it uses uncommon words as synonyms for each entry and provides an example from modern writings for the word’s usage. Here’s the synonym a day blog where the author provides daily synonyms taken from the book’s over 15,000 entries. I highly recommend it, to writers especially! Hey, thanks again for the link you provided!
