How to Get a Vanity URL on Facebook

vanity urlLast week, I shared a list of four inspiring Facebook fan pages I recently discovered. One thing that really surprised me was that only one of the four I featured actually has a vanity URL. All of these pages have many more than 25 fans (the requirement for registering a vanity URL for your fan page), so for me, grabbing a customized URL seems like a smart move.

Of course, I don’t know for sure that it isn’t a deliberate decision by the page owners, but in general, a vanity URL is pretty desirable. Not only does it shorten your URL and make your page easier to share, but it can be a powerful way to continue solidifying the presence of your brand on the web.

In case you’re interested in creating a vanity URL for your fan page, or even your personal profile if you haven’t gotten one yet, this is all you need to do:

  1. Login to Facebook
  2. Go to: http://www.facebook.com/username
  3. Click the link that says, “Set a username for your Pages”
  4. Select your page and enter your desired username
  5. Click “Check Availability” and Confirm

That’s it. Now you share your vanity URL with others and use it as a direct link to you page (it will look something like: http://www.facebook.com/yourpagenamehere).

I have vanity URLs for my personal profile and three of my pages, and it definitely makes the pages easier to link to. Plus, with a shorter URL, I can list the links right on my marketing materials, like my business card, for easy access.

Do you use a vanity URL for your personal profile and pages on Facebook? How do you use the shortened URL to get more traffic?

Hi. I followed your instructions above to create a vanity link for my facebook account. But instead of going directly to my facebook business page, it goes to my personal profile. Do you know how I can change that?

Hi Kris – Did you do step 4 (select your page) before entering the username? If not, login and go to Account > Account Settings > Settings > Username and click Change next to username. Note you can only change your username once. Hope that helps!

Thanks, that does help. And I did try to do that, but it wouldn’t allow me to. Does this have something to do with the number of fans my page has? Do I need more. I think I read somewhere that now they require 100 fans or something? I really, really appreciate your help.

    Hi Kris,

For a Facebook Page to get a vanity URL, it must have at least 25 fans.
